Twelve hours of sun, every day of the year
Ecuador sits directly on the equator. Its rose farms receive roughly twelve hours of intense, consistent natural light every single day, all year round - no short winter days, no weak light seasons. For a rose, that means uninterrupted, even growth and remarkably rich, saturated colour.
Altitude does the slow, patient work
The farms we work with sit at around 3,000 metres above sea level in the Andes. At that altitude the air is cooler and thinner, so roses grow more slowly - and slow growth is the secret to greatness in a rose. The stems grow longer and thicker, the heads larger, and the petals denser than roses hurried along in lowland greenhouses. It is the same principle that makes high-altitude coffee or slow-aged wine exceptional: time, taken properly, shows.
What this means when the box is opened
Ecuadorian roses are prized for three things: the size of their heads, the sculptural length and strength of their stems, and their vase life.
